There are plenty of CEO positions available in Africa for people who are willing to work for a thousand dollars a month with no benefits or insurance. If you are interested I would be happy to hook you up.
Thanks for the encouragement,
I spent 3 weeks in Gimbie with a team from LLU to work on the first phase of the new wing of the hospital. I was forever moved by my time there. I'm so encouraged to hear the work continue and what to encourage you that there are some of us out here that still care about what you're doing even if you feel alone at times. I know the work and needs in Gimbie are endless but the Ethiopian people are special indeed. I stay in contact with a boy (now a man) named Mintesnot Birara. He had a dream at 13 of becoming a "brain doctor". I was immediately taken by this young boy and made a commitment to help him with his education so that one day he would be able to help is Ethiopia brothers and sisters. He is now working on his Masters in Microbiology. My understanding is that he has had a difficult time getting into any medical programs (almost like the Ethiopia educational system is on a forced track). His family lived on the Gimbie Hospital campus when I was there but since some of his sisters have moved and he is in Addis. I spoke with one of his sisters this summer who moved to Sacramento, CA! That was exciting news! Anyway, my hope for Mintesnot is that he will someday come back to help Gimbie Hospital in some capacity - even if it's educating others like Becky is now doing - that's the key to empowering our Ethiopian friends to be able to better care for themselves. I would love to hear more about the goings on at Gimbie. It is a very special place. I'll be watching the blog!!

In response to:Becky’s Famous!

That's awesome!!
I have a question that maybe one of you can answer. I will actually be living in Adama (Nazaret) about 2 hrs. south of Addis Ababa and am confused about anti-malaria drugs. We will be living there for at least a yr. and wonder if it is safe to take the drugs that long? Seems dangerous....is there a better way to do it long term? Not sure if you guys deal with this up in Gimbie. But was hoping since you live in country and have medical backgrounds that you could possibly help me out. I have tried many avenues but no one seems to have an answer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. BTW...we leave in less than 3 weeks so I'm in a bit of a hurry :)
Making a difference ‘today’ is what we are asked to do as Christians. Look for the needs and help when, where and however we can. God asks no more of us and I see all of you at Gimbie ever so gallantly doing just this! He has fortunately placed us within the confinements of time and space, which prevents us from feeling like we have to do everything for everybody everywhere and enables us to do what is before us now, like taking care of George. We do not need to worry about the past or the future except as far as how it may relate to our ‘today’. I love the orphanage/single women’s home idea and hope this vision can take shape soon to give that third option.

In response to:Shivers (by Shaunda)

I remember being shocked at the existence of infanticide in Ethiopia as well; that was something we read about in ancient literature, not modern day life to encounter so closely.
By your statement, ‘God’s ways will always be mysterious to us. It is fruitless to try to untangle His providence from human choice and from the forces of nature and of evil in the world’ you attempt to portray the amazing complexity we face in understanding our faith in God within an open universe and the relativities of our own knowledge about it. Our interpretation of what we believe to be God manifesting Himself in our time-life framework is based upon many personal factors, but I do believe we worship an epiphanic God, a permanent divine presence who is periodically observed by believers rather than an episodic God, an absent presence periodically intervening for believers. Just a little food for thought :)

In response to:Sweet Nothings

What a funny thing to say! I am certain God will give you all the strength and wisdom to see these problems through. He has the solutions, they sometimes just don't become apparent in our time frame.

We are contacting our church, because people have donated to you through them, and having them send the funds collected ASAP.

Please make sure Scott is taken care of...we think he's the greatest! Saw him in a video this week.
